Dr. Martin Collins from the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum
(Washington, US) (http://airandspace.si.edu/) will be giving a lecture at
Tieteiden talo (House of the Learned Societies). Kirkkokatu 6, Helsinki. Lecture
Hall 505. on Thursday 19th March 18.15.
The lecture is jointly arranged by Tekniikan Historian Seura ry (Finnish Society
for the History of Technology), Aalto University and University of Helsinki.
Dr. Martin Collins will be talking on “Following a Multinational Corporation
through the 1990s: Globalization, Markets, Ideology, Power and Other Travelogue
Conundrums”. The presentation is on globalization as seen through the US
multinational Motorola and a space-based global communications project it
initiated called Iridium. The talk presents an effort to correlate a specific
case study to broader understandings of how globalization was constituted in the
1980s and 1990s.
After the lecture, Dr. Collins will provide an overview of and answer questions
on Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, the most visited museum in US and
largest of the Smithsonian's 19 museums. The Museum is home to two historical
research departments and a science unit, the Center for Earth and Planetary
Studies.
Dr. Martin Collins is curator at the Smithsonian National Air and Space museum
and he is working on a history of communications satellites and globalization in
the 1990s, as seen through the multinational satellite telephony venture,
Iridium. He curates the civilian applications satellites collection, a grouping
that includes weather, remote sensing, and communications satellites and related
technologies. He has contributed to a series of Museum exhibits, and was primary
author of the exhibition catalog, Space Race: The U.S.-USSR Competition to Reach
the Moon. His recent efforts have explored the use of new media for exhibitions
and other museum presentations. In 2006, he received the Society for History of
Technology's IEEE Life Member Prize and currently serves as the editor of
History and Technology: An International Journal.
