Urban Transition and Governance in China: Social and Historical
Perspectives
Turku 18.12.2008 klo 09:30
URBAN TRANSITION AND GOVERNANCE IN CHINA:
SOCIAL AND HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVES
Date: December 18th, 2008
Venue: Lecture hall 2, Turku University main building
Organizer: University of Turku, Centre for East Asian Studies
China's cities have experienced huge changes during the past 100
years. Restless and exploratory times after the fall of the Qing
dynasty were followed by the arrangement of the society and
governance into a rigid socialist system in the People's Republic of
China. The work units and neighbourhood committees regulated the
lives of urban residents. The current modernization policy and rapid
globalization have caused breathtaking changes in daily urban life
and the modes of governance.
The workshop brings into focus periods of wars, natural catastrophes
and rapid societal transformations, aiming at discussions on the ways
how China's urban society and governance have changed under the
strenuous conditions and whether it is possible to discern salient
continuities. At the same time, the purpose of the event is to
contribute to a more thorough understanding of the current changes.
