The ERC-funded project ‘The Imperial Encounter in Early Islamic Egypt: Dissecting the Aphrodito Archive’ at Aix-Marseille Université offers two fully-funded, three-year PhD positions to begin in October 2026. The successful applicants will join the PI and a team of three post-doctoral fellows to participate in the material and socio-historical study of the eighth-century papyrological archive from the Middle-Egyptian town of Aphrodito / Kum Ishqaw. Further information on the project can be found here: https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/101201503. Preliminary information on the archive can be found here: https://www.trismegistos.org/arch/detail.php?arch_id=124.
As members of the project, the doctoral candidates will be based in Aix-en-Provence, at the Maison Méditerranéenne des Sciences Humaines, where they will benefit from a rich research environment bringing together History, Ancient Languages, Archaeology, Anthropology and Sociology.
French PhD stipends are in the range of €28k to €29k, and include health benefits. Additionally, the project will cover all necessary research expenses, such as conference attendance and research trips, as well as training beyond what is offered by the Doctoral School.
One of the two PhD projects is intended to be of a comparative nature, inserting the encounter between the Umayyad empire and the indigenous population of Egypt in broader discussions in empires studies. The other PhD is intended to bear more specifically on some aspect of the archive (for ex. taxation, language, materiality, etc), to be discussed with the rest of the project team. They will be supervised by Arietta Papaconstantinou and can be written in English or in French.
It is expected that both candidates will be competent in English. and at least one of the languages of the archive, namely Arabic, Coptic and/or Greek. They will have completed their Master’s degree in a relevant discipline by the starting date of their doctoral contract.
Interested applicants should send a CV and a personal statement briefly outlining the approach they wish to take in their PhD and describing relevant skills and experience to arietta.papaconstantinou at univ-amu.fr<mailto:arietta.papaconstantinou at univ-amu.fr> no later than 22 February 2026. Any enquiries can also be directed to the same address.
