<span style="font-family: Cambria, serif;">The ERC-funded project ‘The Imperial Encounter in Early Islamic Egypt: Dissecting the Aphrodito Archive’ at Aix-Marseille Université offers two fully-funded, three-year PhD positions to begin in October 2026. The successful
applicants will join the PI and a team of three post-doctoral fellows to participate in the material and socio-historical study of the eighth-century papyrological archive from the Middle-Egyptian town of Aphrodito / Kum Ishqaw. Further information on the

Ancient Languages, Archaeology, Anthropology and Sociology.</span></p>

training beyond what is offered by the Doctoral School.</span></p>

<span style="font-family: Cambria, serif;">One of the two PhD projects is intended to be of a comparative nature, inserting the encounter between the Umayyad empire and the indigenous population of Egypt in broader discussions in empires studies. The other
PhD is intended to bear more specifically on some aspect of the archive (for ex. taxation, language, materiality, etc), to be discussed with the rest of the project team. They will be supervised by Arietta Papaconstantinou and can be written in English or
in French.</span></p>
