Dear Colleagues,

I’d be most grateful if you might circulate the information below and attached to any potential PhD students seeking funding.

With thanks
Ray

As part of a collaboration between the Universities of Macquarie (Sydney, Australia)<https://www.mq.edu.au/faculty-of-arts/departments-and-schools/department-of-history-and-archaeology> and Groningen (The Netherlands)<https://www.rug.nl/research/groningen-institute-of-archaeology/?lang=en> we invite potential candidates to express interest for the three-year PhD research project described in the attached word document. We are looking for a candidate wanting to focus on Roman History and Archaeology. The PhD project would be financially supported by Macquarie and Groningen Universities as part of a cotutelle joint PhD programme, sitting alongside another PhD student working on “infrastructural networks and economic integration around Rome” at Macquarie and Groningen; as well as being integrated into larger research networks based in Australasia and Europe. The project would include a period of fieldwork in Italy. Further information is attached, but for further details – please contact ray.laurence at mq.edu.au<mailto:ray.laurence at mq.edu.au>.

I acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land upon which Macquarie University is situated, the Wallamattagal people of the Dharug nation, whose customs and culture have nurtured , and continue to nurture this land, since the Dreamtime. I pay respects to the Dharug people and the Wallamatagal clan and recognise that this university lies on unceded land.

Dear Colleagues and Friends

Pompeian Streets is a new short cartoon<https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jeh0Iw31bP4> based on my research was released today. I’ve also created a blog that links<https://ancientromeinmotion.com/20231010_PompeiianStreets/> elements of the film, including the camel, back to evidence from Pompeii. It would be great if you could take a look at the film and it would be even greater, if you could like it and it would be truly heroic if you could share the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jeh0Iw31bP4

This film is part of a new series of Pompeii films that will be released each month on the Ancient Rome in Motion YouTube Channel<https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCBZEk5H3jUpFcUq0XW7CvqQ>. There is also a website, which has more details including the blogs that support the films<https://ancientromeinmotion.com/>. At present, 5 films are in production and, funding willing, more will be made. The first films are funded by a prize that I won in a pitching competition in 2022.

To look into the making of these films, you can find early sketches and ideas developing on Ancient Rome in Motion’s Patreon Page<https://patreon.com/user?u=83152769>. In time, you and your students may get to know Spoticus the dog<https://twitter.com/wearecognitive/status/1712778321241464834> – who had his first outing on twitter last week. I’m working again with Andrew Park and his animation studio We are Cognitive<https://www.wearecognitive.com/>. This is the same team that brought you the Ted.Ed films A Glimpse of Teenage Life in Ancient Rome<https://www.ted.com/talks/ray_laurence_a_glimpse_of_teenage_life_in_ancient_rome?language=en> and Four Sisters in Ancient Rome<https://www.ted.com/talks/ray_laurence_four_sisters_in_ancient_rome?language=en> with 20 million YouTube views.

Please share the new film with your students, or with other educators, or on social media and consider becoming a supporter of the series (for as little as a cup of coffee) via Ancient Rome in Motion’s Patreon Page<https://patreon.com/user?u=83152769>.

Many thanks for reading this far!

With best wishes

Ray
