Writing (on) the Urban Question Workshop with Sarah Butler

6-8 May 2019
Vrije Universiteit Brussel

We are excited to announce that our workshop, Writing (on) the Urban
Question, will be held for the second time in Brussels in May 2019. We
organized our first workshop in May 2018, which was a great success.
Sponsored by the Brussels Centre for Urban Studies and the VUB Doctoral
School, the workshop is led by the renowned creative writer, literature
consultant, and urban activist, Sarah Butler (Manchester, UK). It will take
place from 6-8 May 2019, at the VUB Etterbeek campus.

Writing (on) the Urban Question is an exciting and unique multidisciplinary
writing workshop, specifically tailored for doctoral students and
early-career academics working on urban issues. In order to make this
unique opportunity more accessible, the workshop is free. The programme of
the workshop consists of two days of indoor writing exercises and
discussion, as well as one day out and about in Brussels, using the city as
a rich context to practice a different form of writing about the urban
question. These indoor sessions will be a mix of writing exercises, focused
discussions on writing issues and readings already provided by Sarah
Butler, and feedback. The theme of the first day (6 May) is Writing About
Place and that of the second day (7 May) is Creative Techniques & Academic
Writing. The theme of the workshop’s final day (8 May) is Writing Place in
the Moment. A more detailed programme will be provided to the attendees by
the end of April 2019.

For quality purposes we can accommodate up to 14 people. Those who are
interested to participate need to send me their application (via email) by
Monday 1 April 2019. The application consists of: 1) a copy of your CV,
and, 2) one-page motivation letter, briefly explaining your interest in the
workshop and the focus of your current writing. Parastou Saberi and Bas van
Heur will adjudicate the applications and I will send out the results by 8
April 2019. The main criteria for acceptance are the stage of your research
and the focus of your writing.

Please send your CV and motivation letter (both in pdf format) to Parastou
Saberi (parastou.saberi at vub.be) with the subject email: Writing Workshop by
Monday 1 April 2019.
