At the University of Greifswald’s interdisciplinary International Research Training Group “Baltic Peripeties. Narratives of Reformations, Revolutions and Catastrophes”, in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, ten part-time positions (65%, subject to funding by the German Research Council, DFG) are available at the earliest from 1 April 2021, as a
Doctoral Researcher
for the duration of three years. Payment will be made according to pay group 13 TV-L Wissenschaft.
Tasks:
The position provides the opportunity to conduct research for a doctorate. The obligatory tasks within the study and research programme contribute towards the completion of the doctorate.
The International Research Training Group was initiated by the University of Greifswald, the NTNU in Trondheim (Norway), and the University of Tartu (Estonia) to provide a common programme for doctoral students and post-doctoral researchers. Greifswald offers the subject areas German Literature, Scandinavian, Finnish, Baltic and Slavonic Studies, History, Political Science, and Philosophy. The complementary disciplines of Comparative and Nordic Literature Studies, Ethnology, German and Film Studies, History and Theology are offered in Trondheim and Tartu.
As a category of production of meaning, ‘peripety’ was first used in Aristotle’s Poetics. There, it denotes the turning point in a story, the event in which it becomes obvious that what is expected will not happen. The graduate programme aims to use the analytical potential of the concept of ‘peripety’, but in a different manner, as a further developed umbrella term for all sorts of turning points, whether they be revolutions, reformations, catastrophes, or tipping points.
The joint research programme ‘Baltic Peripeties’ aims to use the term ‘peripety’ to extend ‘narration’ and ‘event’ as novel means for investigating and understanding the Baltic Sea region. Which historically relevant peripeties determine past and current perceptions of the Baltic Sea region? What kind of social, cultural, political, ecological and economic agency do these peripeties possess (historically, currently and for the future)? What kinds of conceptual and normative questions arise in the context of coping with past or anticipated future peripeties? In addressing such questions, the IRTG will be the first to make theoretical and methodical advances in the application of the narratological concept of peripety as a tool of enquiry in regional studies.
In this context, we invite applications with topics for doctorates based on one of the disciplines mentioned above and with a focus on one of the key research areas, which we outline here: www.uni-greifswald.de/peripeties
The study programme within the International Research Training Group includes relevant courses held locally at each university as well as tri-national workshops in Greifswald, Trondheim and Tartu. Furthermore, it is expected that each doctoral candidate will spend time as a visiting researcher at the partner universities. We provide mobility funds in addition to the salary.
Requirements:
Applicants should have obtained a good first degree and normally have, or be about to obtain, a Master’s qualification in a discipline relevant to the doctoral topic. Applicants must show willingness and ability to play an active role in an interdisciplinary and international research programme. Applicants are expected to have a good command of written and spoken English, as well as good knowledge of at least one language of the Baltic Sea region (including German). A high degree of independence, efficiency and responsibility as well as a high level of social competence are also required.
The two-stage application process initially requires an exposé on a relevant research topic connected to one of the key areas of research (max. 10 pages), which also explains the applicant’s motivation. Furthermore, the applications must include a curriculum vitae and a digital copy of the M.A. dissertation, copies of secondary and higher education certificates, one written reference, and a cover letter. Following the evaluation of the applications, suitable candidates will be invited for an interview. Texts and information on the procedure will be provided with the invitation for the interview.
The position is open to all persons, irrespective of gender. The University would like to increase the proportion of women in areas in which they are underrepresented and thus applications from women are particularly welcome and will be treated with priority if they have the same qualifications and as long as there are no clear reasons which make a fellow applicant more suitable.
Severely disabled applicants with the same qualifications will be considered with preference.
In accordance with § 68(3) PersVG M-V, the Staff Council will only be involved in staff matters of the academic or artistic staff on request.
Please only submit copies of your application documents as they cannot be returned.
Unfortunately, the application costs (e.g. travel expenses for interviews) will not be reimbursed by the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
Applications comprising all of the required documents named above must be sent in English or German with reference to the job advertisement number 20/Op34 by 3 December 2020 via email (one PDF file) to:
