The Cold War left indelible traces on the city, where polarities on the global stage crystallized and intersected with political and social dynamics predating and bypassing the Blocs. This collection taps into the rich fabric of memories, histories and cultural interactions of thirteen cities worldwide and the lived experience of urban communities du- ring the long Cold War: activated and mobilized by atomic technologies, taking tourist photographs, attending commercial fairs, enjoying the cinema and the ballet, singing in choirs, paying respect in local cemeteries, visiting museums, and responding to town councils, unions and the local press. Literature, film, pho- tography, the press, the monument, the cemetery, the factory, the ruin, the archive and the natural ecosystem are some of the key frameworks of cultural production elucidated here with a view to countering and exploding received myths about the Cold War.

Deutschland war für die finnische Wissenschaftsgesellschaft über Jahrhunderte hin- weg das wichtigste Bezugsland außerhalb Nordeuropas. Dies hat Finnland seit dem Mittelalter geprägt und ist selbst in der heutigen internationalisierten Wissenschaftswelt noch bemerkbar. Umgekehrt stand Finnland, auch über bekannte kulturhistorische Fixpunkte hinaus, immer wieder im Fokus deutscher Forschung. Marjatta Hietala stellt hier erstmals die finnisch-deutschen Wissenschaftsbeziehungen umfassend dar und berücksichtigt dabei zahlreiche bisher nicht systematisch ausgewertete Archivquellen. Einen Schwer- punkt bilden die Wissenschaftskontakte bei- der Länder zur Zeit der großen Innovationen am Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts, als sogar mehr Professoren- und Expertenreisen nach Deutschland als ins benachbarte Schweden führten, und die Wissenschaftsbeziehungen Finnlands zum „Dritten Reich“.
Marjatta Hietala, emeritierte Professorin für Allgemeine Geschichte der Universität Tampere und Ehrenpräsidentin des internationalen Historikerverbandes CISH, ist eine ausgewiesene Expertin auf dem Gebiet inter- nationaler Wissenschaftskontakte.

Lavishly illustrated, Helsinki – Finland’s Innovative Capital tells how a small, rocky seaport in remote Finland developed, within two centuries, into an innovative centre, the home of world famous architects, designers, musicians and scientists and the seat of some of the leading high-tech centres.

It tells how Helsinki acquired its handsome Neoclassical centre; how today’s internationally renowned childcare and education services in Finland were developed; how the city was saved during the World War II by its innovative defence system, and how the payments of war -reparations led to the path that eventually -produced e. g. Nokia phones.

It also tells how Helsinki City officials actively sought the latest information from abroad about municipal services and how international exhibitions in Helsinki introduced modern materials, machinery and consumer culture to the rest of Finland.
