ELIITIT MURROSKAUSINA

Tutkijaseminaari Suomen Pietarin pääkonsulaatissa syyskuussa 2016.

Seminaari on osa Venäjän ja Suomen eliitit 1800 - 1900-luvuilla
-seminaarisarjaa. Edellinen seminaari järjestettiin marraskuussa 2014 otsikolla
"Eliittien kohtaaminen: kansallisuus- ja kansalaisuustekijän merkitys
suhteille".

Pyydämme ehdotuksia esitelmiksi, jotka tarkastelevat venäläisiä ja
suomalaisia eliittejä 1800 - 1900-lukujen murroskausina.

Murroskaudet ovat eliittien kannalta merkityksellisiä. Yhteiskunnallisten
murrosten tapahtuessa eliitit järjestäytyvät usein uudelleen. Toisaalta
tapahtuu vaihtuvuutta, toisaalta sitä tasapainottaa eliittien pyrkimys ja kyky
ylläpitää omaa jatkuvuuttaan.

Hallitsijanvaihdokset, poliittisen kriisit, sodat ja vallankumoukset ovat usein
olleet Suomelle ja Venäjälle yhteisiä. 1800 - 1900-lukujen historiaa
leimaavat monet murroskaudet kuten:

- Napoleonin sodat
- Suomen valloitus ja liittäminen Venäjään
- Krimin sodan käänne
- maaorjuuden loppu ja muut 1860-luvun reformit Venäjällä sekä vastaava
reformikausi Suomessa
- nykyaikaisen kansanedustuslaitoksen muodostaminen Venäjällä 1905 - 1906 ja
Suomessa 1906 - 1907
- ensimmäinen maailmansota
- vallankumous
- sisällissota
- Neuvostoliiton ja itsenäisen Suomen rakentaminen
- toinen maailmansota ja sen seuraukset
- kylmä sota
- Neuvostoliiton hajoaminen ja Venäjän federaation synty

Murrosaikoina kummankin maan eri eliitit ovat usein joko liittoutuneet tai
ottaneet yhteen. Vallankumouksen seurauksena merkittävä osa vanhasta
venäläisestä eliitistä emigroitui Suomen kautta.

Keisarikunnan ja suuriruhtinaskunnan sekä neuvostoimperiumin ja itsenäistyneen
tasavallan eliittien rinnastaminen ja vertailu valaisee eliittien olemusta
laajasti. Erilaisista yhteiskuntajärjestelmistä voi löytyä mielenkiintoisia
samankaltaisuuksia. Eliittien tutkimus valottaa imperiumin ja sen sittemmin
itsenäistyneen rajamaan suhteita, vuorovaikutusta ja konflikteja.

Järjestämme kaksipäiväisen seminaarin, jossa esitelmöi kahdeksan
suomalaista ja kahdeksan venäläistä. Seminaarissa voi esitelmöidä suomeksi,
venäjäksi tai englanniksi. Ensimmäinen päivä on varattu englanninkielisille
esitelmille eikä silloin järjestetä tulkkausta. Toisena päivänä ovat
vuorossa suomen- ja venäjänkieliset esitelmät ja tilaisuudessa on suomi -
venäjä - suomi -simultaanitulkkaus.

Seminaarin tavoitteena on vahvistaa suomalais-venäläistä tieteellistä
yhteistyötä sekä edistää suomalaisten ja venäläisten tutkijoiden
verkostoitumista.

Seminaarissa ei ole osallistumismaksua. Järjestäjillä ei ole mahdollisuutta
korvata matka- ja hotellikuluja, joita kannattaa hakea eri rahoittajilta.

Pyydämme lähettämään sivun pituisen esitelmäabstraktin 1.12.2015
mennessä. Esitelmien hyväksymisestä ilmoitetaan 15.12.2015 mennessä.

Varsinaisen esitelmäpaperin tulee olla valmiina 1.9.2016. Osa
esitelmäpapereista on mahdollista julkaista sarjassa "Peterburgskij
istoritsheskij zhurnal" (julkaisija Venäjän tiedeakatemian historian
instituutti Pietarissa).

Seminaari järjestetään syyskuussa 2016 Pietarissa, Suomen pääkonsulaatissa,

ELITES IN TIMES OF CHANGE

A seminar at the Consulate General of Finland, St. Petersburg, Russia.

The seminar is a part of a series of academic seminars on Russian and Finnish
elites of the 19th and 20th centuries. The previous seminar, "Elite encounters
in the 19th century: issues of nationality and citizenship", was organised in
November 2014.

We invite papers on Finnish and Russian elites during the periods of political
turmoil, military crisis and rapid social change of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Periods of turmoil are of particular significance for the life cycles of elites.
Rapid social change calls for regrouping and reorganising of elite
groups/structures, often leading to a partial or even complete replacement. On
the other hand, individual members of established elites usually have both the
means and the will to maintain acquired positions, thus ensuring continuity even
in times of change.

Many historical key events - changes of ruler, political crises, wars and
revolutions - have a shared significance for the history of Russia and that of
Finland. In the 19th and 20th centuries, such periods include:

- Napoleonic wars
- War of Finland and her annexation to Russia as a Grand Duchy 
- Crimean War as a political turning point
- Abolition of serfdom and other 1860s reforms in Russia and the corresponding
reform period in 
Finland 
- Establishment of a modern system of representation: Russia 1905 - 1906,
Finland 1906 - 1907
- WWI
- February and October Revolutions
- Civil war periods: Russia 1917 - 1922, Finland 1918 
- Formation and building stage: Soviet Union and independent Finland
- WWII and its aftermath
- Cold War period
- Dissolution of the Soviet Union and the birth of the Russian Federation

During periods of crisis, the elites of Russia and Finland have sometimes joined
forces; at other times, they have collided head on. After the Revolution, a
significant section of the Russian ancien régime emigrated to or via Finland. 

Juxtaposing the elites of the Russian Empire and the Finnish Grand Duchy,
vis-à-vis the elites of the Soviet empire and the Republic of Finland, we aim
to shed light on the similarities of the nature and functioning of elites in
different periods and within all kinds of ideological systems. On the
Russian-Finnish context, the relationship of an empire with an annexed
borderland and, later on, between a new empire and its independent neighbour,
have particular bearings on the interplay and conflicts of their respective
elites.

The seminar is a two-day event, with presentations by eight Finnish and eight
Russian scholars. The languages of the seminar are Finnish, Russian and English.
The presentations of the first seminar day are in English, with no
interpretation. The second day is reserved for presentations in Finnish and
Russian, with simultaneous interpretation between the two languages.

The aim of the seminar is to strengthen the Finnish-Russian academic cooperation
and to promote the social and professional networking of historians of both
countries. 

There is no participation fee. Travelling and accommodation expenses are not
covered by the organisers. We recommend that the participants independently
apply for funding from sponsors. For Finnish participants, an easy no-visa

The deadline for abstracts (max. length one page) is December 1st, 2015. The
letters of acceptance/rejection will be sent by December 15th, 2015.

The deadline for papers is September 1st, 2016. A selection of papers may be
published in the "Peterburgskii istoritcheskii zhurnal", the publication series
of the Saint Petersburg Institute of History of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The seminar will take place in September 2016. The venue of the seminar is the
Consulate General of Finland, address Preobrazhenskaya Ploshchad 4, St.
Petersburg, Russia.
