Re-thinking Power and the State in History

Finland in Comparison IV

Venue: University of Tampere, Finland.

Date: October 12–13, 2015.

Keynote speakers: Michael Mann (UCLA), Jie-Hyun Lim (Sogang University), Tuija
Pulkkinen (University of Helsinki).

The fourth meeting in the international seminar series Finland in Comparison
organized by the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Historical Research will
explore and discuss national histories in comparative perspective. The special
theme of the 2015 conference is the role of the state in history and the
(important) role of the state in explaining the past in different contexts. We
also welcome contributions that look at national histories from other points of
view.

As with the past seminars, the Re-thinking Power and the State seminar welcomes
papers ranging from theoretical reflections and historiographical discussions to
case studies. In particular, we invite contributions that discuss challenges of
methodological nationalism, and that use frameworks informed by transnational
history and global history. Presentations are not restricted to the history of
Finland.

Researchers interested in presenting a paper at the seminar are asked to send a
short abstract of no more than 300 words in English by May 31, 2015 to the
following email addresses: pertti.haapala[at]uta.fi (director of the CoE),
johanna.annola[at]uta.fi (coordinator of the CoE). Participants will receive
notifications of acceptance by June 15, 2015.

For additional information on the conference, please see the conference website
or contact johanna.annola[at]uta.fi.

WELCOME!
