Finland in Comparison III: Small Societies and Big History


Venue: University of Tampere, Finland 
Date: October 27–28, 2014 
Paper proposals due June 6, 2014 

The third meeting in the international seminar series Finland in Comparison,
organised by the Finnish Centre of Excellence in Historical Research, will
discuss and reassess national histories in comparative perspective. The theme of
the year is “small societies and big history”. Presentations are not
restricted to Finnish history, but all papers related to the topic, including
case studies, historiography and theoretical reflection, are welcome. We
particularly invite papers that offer fresh views on issues like methodological
nationalism, transnational history and global perspectives to national
histories.

Keynote Speakers:

Stephen Broadberry, London School of Economics, UK
Margaret Hunt, Uppsala University, Sweden
Pavel Kolář, European University Institute, Italy

Researchers interested in presenting a paper at the seminar are asked to send a
short abstract of no more than 300 words in English by June 6, 2014 to the
following email addresses:

pertti.haapala at uta.fi (director of the CoE),
johanna.annola at uta.fi (coordinator of the CoE).

The speakers will be informed of paper acceptance by June 30, 2014. The papers
will be made available to other participants via conference website (a
password-protected section) by October 10, 2014.

There is no registration fee. The organisers provide the meals and accommodation
for the speakers.
