Erik Allardt Fellowship 2014–2015

Purpose and Nature of the Erik Allardt Fellowship In order to further and
strengthen academic and cultural exchange between Finland and Sweden within a
context of high quality research in the social and human sciences, the Helsinki
Collegium for Advanced Studies, Stiftelsen Riksbankens Jubileumsfond and the
Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study have created the Erik Allardt Fellowship
Programme.

For the academic year 2014–2015 the Swedish Collegium offers a residential
fellowship for one or two scholars with a tenured or long-term (at least five
years) university position in Finland. Candidates may come from any discipline
within the humanities and social sciences and neighbouring scholarly fields.
Early career as well as senior scholars are welcome to apply. Candidates must
have obtained the competence of at least “Docent” and must be at least three
years beyond their doctoral degree by the time of application. The application
may be for the entire academic year (September 2014 – mid-June 2015) or
alternatively for one academic semester (September – mid- December 2014 or
mid-January – mid-June 2015).

Facilities and Services at SCAS

Founded in 1985, Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study (SCAS) is chartered by the
Government of Sweden. It is a national institute for advanced study in the
social sciences and the humanities. It is located in the late eighteenth-century
Linneanum and the adjacent late nineteenth-century Prefect Villa in the middle
of the Botanic Garden in Uppsala. The Collegium is a scholarly community of some
thirty-five Fellows, normally from at least a dozen countries and more than 20
universitites in three continents. Fellows are free to focus on their own
research but the Collegium tries to serve as a free meeting place and a breeding
zone of new ideas across boundaries of discipline, nation, and age.

Accommodation for Fellows is arranged by the Collegium and all Fellows have
their own fullyequipped office. The collections of Carolina Rediviva Library and
other scientific facilities at Uppsala University are situated nearby. Books are
delivered directly to the Collegium by the university library. Weekly seminars
serve as a focus of shared activities. In addition, lectures, colloquia and
other intellectual encounters offer opportunities for interaction as do the
lunches each weekday and excursions and other social and cultural events.

Stipends

The holder of the fellowship receives a monthly stipend, the size of which will
be decided after consultation with the applicant and a consideration of relevant
circumstances. Costs for housing and lunches are also covered.

Deadline and Application Procedures

Applicants should submit, in one document, a curriculum vitae and a project
proposal (1500–3000 words) in English. The final selection will be made by the
Principal of SCAS at the recommendation of an Academic Board consisting of
Professor Risto Alapuro (University of Helsinki), Professor Christina Garsten
(Stockholm University), Professor Pauli Kettunen (University of Helsinki),
Professor Laura Kolbe (University of Helsinki), Professor Uskali Mäki
(University of Helsinki), Professor Kari Palonen (University of Jyväskylä),
Professor Sami Pihlström (Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies), Professor
Björn Wittrock (SCAS).
