CALL FOR PAPERS: FINNFORUM X
Work, Workers, and the Finn Factor in 20th Century Labor Relations: Strikes,
Political Economy, and Transnationalism
April 10-12, 2014, Michigan Technological University and Finlandia University,
Houghton/Hancock, Michigan, USA
The Institute of Migration in Turku, Finland, and the University of Turku’s
History Department, along with Finlandia University’s Finnish American
Heritage Center and Historical Archives, with support from Michigan
Technological University’s Humanities Department announces FinnForm X to be
held in Houghton and Hancock, Michigan, on the centennial of the cessation of
the 1913-14 Copper Strike in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. FinnForum X, an
international conference, is being held in conjunction with a Copper Country
Strike Symposium hosted by Michigan Technological University’s Copper Country
Historical Collections, Department of Social Sciences, and the National Park
Service’s Keweenaw National Historical Park.
FinnForum X anticipates and is soliciting paper submissions from a wide range of
disciplinary perspectives in the following topical areas:
Social history research related to or directly based off the work of Dr. Varpu
Lindström
Analyses of labor organization in historical and contemporary Finnish and
Finnish North American industries
Impact of historical Finnish immigration on labor organization in transnational
contexts
Effects of early 20th century labor organization and strikes by Finns on various
industrial settings and managerial practices
Importance of Finnish, Finnish immigrant, and Finnish North American women’s
activism in early 20th century labor organization
Comparisons between labor activities, organizational practices, and social
settings in Finland, Sweden, Norway, Russia, and North America
Significance of Finnish immigrant organizational and strike strategies on
historical and current capitalism
Contemporary remembrance and collective memory pertaining to Finnish and Finnish
North American labor and strike histories
Other topics connecting issues of ethnicity, identity, class, gender, and
cultural connections to civic discourse and the historic struggle for civil
liberties in Finland, Soviet Karelia, Lapland, and North America
Abstract submission to present a paper at FinnForum X is now open and will close
on January 1, 2014. Abstracts should be no more than 250 words, and may be
submitted via email to finnforumx at gmail.com with the subject line “FinnForum X
Proposal.” Submitters will be notified of acceptance by January 16, 2014.

The Institute of Migration and the Finnish American Historical Archive is
offering funding for two, highly competitive $250 travel grants for
undergraduate or graduate scholars to travel to the Archives in Hancock to
research its collections in order to submit a proposal and do research for a
paper presented at FinnForum X. In addition, grant recepients will be eligible
for free conference registrations to help allay the cost of traveling to
FinnForum X in April. Please contact the Finnish American Historical Archives at
