International Seminar Finland and Russia: Images of the Shared Past
Petrozavodsk, September 23–26, 2014

The coming year 2014 will feature anniversaries of the remarkable events for
both Finnish and Russian history, which constitute part of their shared past:
1714, 1789, 1809, 1899, 1904, 1939, 1944, a list which is easy to extend. The
events which constituted these dates were sometimes perceived dissimilarly by
their participants and contemporaries, and their representations in historical
memory in Finland and Russia and interpretations in national history writing
took different, if not contrasting ways.

We believe that joint studies of the difficult moments of our shared history, in
all the complexity and diversity of their interpretations, will promote further
rapprochement and mutual enrichment of different schools of historiography as
well as mutual understanding and development of new interesting history
projects.

What kinds of dissimilarities existed in assessing and interpreting the same
historical events in Finland and Russia? How have they been expressed on
conceptual, rhetorical, metaphorical, and symbolic levels? What have been the
reasons of these dissimilarities: differences in ideology, culture, political
agendas, level of awareness, influence of propaganda or external factors,
different forms of the transformation of historical memory?

We propose to discuss these and related problems at an international research
seminar, which will be held in late September 2014 at Petrozavodsk State
University.

Seminar papers will be published prior to the seminar. The Organizing Committee
reserves the right to evaluate and select submitted applications. Participation
is free of charge, but participants are supposed to cover travel and
accommodation expenses themselves.

Working languages: Russian and English.

Deadlines:
Applications, including titles and short abstracts: December 15, 2013
Submission of full papers: February 28, 2014
