CFP: Immigrants and Civil Society - 16th Nordic Migration Research
Conference & 9th ETMU days

Turun yliopistossa pidetään 13.-15.8.2012 pohjoismainen
muuttoliiketutkimuksen konferenssi. Tapahtuman yhteydessä
järjestetään myös kaksi historia-aiheista työryhmää;
muuttoliiketutkimuksessa kun historiallinen perspektiivi on usein
jäänyt vähemmälle huomiolle. Järjestäjät etsivät nyt esitelmän
pitäjiä kyseisiin työryhmiin. Ohessa ryhmien kuvaukset sekä ohjeet
esitelmäehdotusten jättämiseen. Ehdotukset on jätettävä 15.4.2012
mennessä.

Workshop I: The role of immigrant organizations in the integration
process: Historical perspectives

The goal of this workshop is to examine the role that organizations
formed by immigrants have played in immigrants’ integration process
in different historical and societal contexts. It has been argued,
for example, that organizations may help immigrants integrate in
their countries of settlement, as they provide an important link
between the ‘old life’ and the ‘new life’. On the other hand, some
scholars have voiced concerns over organizations having the opposite
effect: that they may slow down the process of integration into the
new society. This workshop focuses on how political, religious, and
cultural organizations of immigrants have negotiated the dual goals
of preserving ethnic cultures and/or identities and of helping
immigrants’ incorporation process in different historical contexts,
e.g. in immigrant communities in the Nordic countries or in Nordic
emigrant communities in other parts of the world.

Workshop II: Newcomers’ communities in the history of the Nordic
region

The workshop deals with history of the newcomers' communities and
national minorities in the Nordic region. The Nordic region had areas
that were multicultural and polyethnic, so national minorities and
migrants either created own associations or entered the associations
previously formed by majority population. It is well-known that
nobles, merchants, peasants etc. had their estate associations and
some of them, for example, peasant communities were administrative
units, organised by state, and self-governed social structures. Some
communities were informal and had personal nature as social
connections. The workshop analyses interaction and cooperation inside
communities between different ethnic groups, among different
communities and between communities and society in multicultural
environment. The importance of professional and religious communities
such as guilds, trade unions, art circles and church congregations in
social integration of newcomers is also to be considered in the
workshop.

Conference description:

The focus of much research of immigrants in the Nordic countries has
been on the economic circumstances and state policies regarding
migration and integration. Far less attention has been devoted to the
role of the institutions of civil society in facilitating or impeding
the incorporation of newcomers into Nordic societies. The theme of
this conference is intended to be a response to that imbalance in
research priorities.

The conference organizers are inviting papers that address issues
related to the incorporation of newcomers into receiving societies in
the developed world, with special emphasis on the Nordic countries,
and on issues related to fair means of inclusion. These topics are
broad and can be approached from a variety of thematic and
methodological perspectives. Furthermore, the conference also
welcomes all proposals within the broader field of ethnic and
migration studies. The conference language is English.
