Baltic and Nordic Cold War Summer School 
“The Cold War in the Baltic Sea Region”

Call for Papers

21 – 25 August 2011
Tartu, Estonia

The program will consist of presentations by senior scholars and
workshop like discussions of the submitted research papers.
PhD-students are invited to submit their proposals on any aspect of
the Cold War in the Baltic Sea region. One focus of this Summer
School will be the ‘eastern dimension’ of the Cold War in the region.
The School offers the opportunity to present papers and to receive
extensive feedback from experts and peers. 

Applicants should submit a 400 word abstract of the proposed research
paper and a brief CV to the local organizer Dr Olaf Mertelsmann
(omertelsmann at yahoo.co.uk) by 1 June 2011. 

Notification of acceptance will be made by 10 June 2011. Successful
applicants should submit their papers not exceeding 8,000 words by 5
August 2011.

For applicants from the Baltic states and the Nordic countries
participation is free of charge, board, accommodation and part of the
travel expenses will be covered. Applicants from other countries
provide for their own travelling expenses and pay a participation fee
of €200. The School will provide board and accommodation. 

The Summer School is organized by the Institute of History and
Archeology of the University of Tartu, Estonia, in cooperation with
the Nordic and North/Central European Network of Cold War Researchers
(Norcencowar), the target financed project “Estonia in the Era of the
Cold War” and the project “Baltic Regionalism: Constructing Political
Space(s) in Northern Europe, 1800–2000”.
