Cultural Meanings of Illness – An interdisciplinary Nordic seminar

April 15, 2011, 10-17
Janus Auditorium, Sirkkala campus, Kaivokatu 12, University of Turku

How do we understand health and illness? In which ways are they
embedded in different historical, cultural, and social practices? Are
notions of health/illness gendered and classed – and if so, how?

The one-day inter-Nordic and interdisciplinary seminar will ponder on
different representations of health and illness in both historical and
contemporary contexts. Invited speakers will shed light on various
aspects of illness – understood both as a personal experience, as a
social concern, as a variety of cultural representations, and as
social and historical constructions. The use and analysis of
different materials (medical documents, fictional texts,
autobiographical accounts, lay writings or scientific articles) and
methods used in research, give rise to different questions – and
answers.

The purpose of the seminar is to bring together scholars interested
in diverse perspectives and views concerning health and illness. The
invited speakers and panelists represent disciplines such as history,
literature, sociology, ethnology, anthropology, and gender studies.
The seminar is organized by the Kone research project Cultural
Meanings of Illness in Modernizing Finland,
