Description of the sessions:

Even if the core of all the gambling games is the same - players bet
on the outcome of some event - games and gaming contexts differ from
each other. All forms of gambling have developed in connection with
technological, social, cultural and economic changes. The aim of
these two sessions is to study the connections between gambling and
the societies
that surround it. The stress is on historical changes or particular
conditions of gambling in different contexts.

Session 1) Historical Constructions of Gambling (Organizer: Riitta
Matilainen)

The purpose of this session is to discuss gambling as an activity
taking place in time and in a certain context. An emphasis on
comparative
approach and change (e.g. different countries, gender or social
classes) is recommended. Topics of interest include but are not
limited to the following questions:
- What has motivated people to gamble?
- How have these motivations changed in the course of time?
- What has been the role of (national) gambling monopolies in
shaping people’s gambling
experiences?
- What has been the role of dreaming and thrill seeking in
gambling?
- How and why has the experience of chance changed? Or has
it?
- How has irrationality of chance been made into a part of
'modern' and 'democratic' life?

Session 2) Gambling, Society, and Culture (Organizer: Jani Kinnunen)

The purpose of this session is to consider gambling in particular
conditions. An emphasis on socio-cultural connections of gambling is
recommended. Topics of interest include but are not limited to the
following questions:
- What kind of meanings do players attach to gambling?
- Why is gambling sometimes seen as a sin?
- What are the social meanings of monetary bets?
- What kinds of communities do gamblers have in the online
environment?
- Why some forms of gambling are permitted and some prohibited
in different societies and
cultures?
- What is the role of the media in the emergence of poker
celebrities?
- How gambling games differ from other games and play?
