GLOBAL, NATIONAL AND LOCAL APPROACHES TO PUBLIC HEALTH

Nordic Research Network for Medical History –
Summer School for PhD-students
7–10 September 2010
Organised by University of Tampere, Department of History and
Philosophy

This PhD-course aims at examining the interplay of global, national,
regional and local concerns in shaping health and environmental
policies in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. A key concern
will be to discuss theoretical and methodological tools for exploring
the interaction of these different influences. How have some health
and environmental problems come to be defined as ‘global threats’,
while others, often equally or more serious problems, have been seen
as national, regional or local concerns? How have international,
national and local aspirations converged, clashed and struggled with
each other in the formulation of policies? What has been the role of
different actors – international organisations, state agencies,
non-governmental organisations, local authorities etc – in the design
and implementation of health and environmental campaigns.

Participants: The course is aimed at PhD-students with different
disciplinary backgrounds. The number of participants is limited to
20. Should more sign up, selection criteria will be used to ensure a
certain distribution of participants from different Nordic
universities, but otherwise we will follow the first come first
served principle.

Costs: There is no course fee. Hotel accommodation in double rooms,
lunches and coffees are provided by the organisers. Travel expenses
have to be covered by the participants.

Form: A combination of lectures, workshops and discussions.
Participants shall submit a text of 5-10 pages about their project by
8 August. These texts will be distributed to the other participants.

Registration: Please sign up with Minna Harjula,
minna.harjula at uta.fi, with information about your name, project title
and disciplinary background by 31 May. The acceptance letters will be
sent by e-mail in mid-June.
