Family Archives, 13th to 19th centuries: what present, what future?
Call for papers
The International Conference 'Family Archives - XIII-XIX centuries:
what present, what future?' aims at making an analysis of Family
Archives in Portugal and in other European countries, up to the
Industrial Revolution. It proposes to do so under the very different
yet complimentary perspectives of their archivistic, historical,
patrimonial and cultural dimensions and diffusion. After its
conclusion, the consequent results will be published.
The concept of 'Family Archive' will be taken at its broader sense,
including different types of family's organization throughout
history. The starting point will be the Ancient Regime's elite family
archives which were preserved. Whenever possible we will take the
analysis of the development and growth of the Family Archive up to
the 19th century, thus trying to take into account all its changes
and continuities, in order to attempt the most comprehensive insight
of the archives and their relation with the family history.
The present call for papers is directed to all of those who wish to
bring to public their own archives or those of which they are
responsible for, to all of those who are interested in crutinizing
and debating the archivistic forms and organization of these special
archives, to all those who are interested in using the information
and research possibilities that the study of these archives allows,
and, finally, to all those who face problems with patrimonial and
cultural diffusion of family archives.
The papers will be divided by the following themes/sections:
1) Presentation of family archives (in private or public
institutions)
2) Technical organization
3) Patrimonial keeping
4) Diffusion/cultural recovery of family archives
5) Making history with and of family archives
