Trapped: Memories of Three Years in East German Prisons, 1961–64

'In December 1961 I was caught by the East German Secret Police
(Stasi) in East Berlin when preparing the flight of a fellow student;
thirty years later I sat down and wrote up my experience which I
combined with the rich collection of personal documents surviving
from the period.' 

On the eve of the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall,
Manfred Görlach will share with us his experiences of political
imprisonment in East Germany. 

Professor emeritus Manfred Görlach is a noted scholar of English. His
latest publications include A Dictionary of European Anglicisms: A
Usage Dictionary of Anglicisms in Sixteen European Languages (Oxford
University Press, 2003); English in Europe (Oxford University Press,
2002), Still More Englishes (John Benjamins, 2002); and English
World-Wide 1980–1999 (John Benjamins, 2001). 

Open to all, the lecture is hosted by the European Area and Cultural
Studies programme.
