The Freie Univ. Berlin is happy to announce our New Master Program 2026/2027: MA Ancient Worlds – Interdisciplinary Ancient Studies including the profile History of Knowledge in Ancient World

Freie Universität Berlin is one of the internationally leading centers for the study of past societies. The new, consecutive two-year MA program ‘Ancient Worlds – Interdisciplinary Ancient Studies’ is a forward-looking program that encompasses eight profile areas: Egyptology, Ancient Near Eastern Studies, Archaeoinformatics, Classical Archaeology, Prehistoric Archaeology, Near Eastern Archaeology, the History of Knowledge in Antiquity, and the interdisciplinary profile Ancient Worlds. Courses are offered in both German and English.

While comparable offerings often combine digital methods with individual disciplines within the study of antiquity, ‘Ancient Worlds’ systematically integrates archaeological, philological, and computer-aided approaches. This enables students to define their own individual areas of focus and to combine diverse perspectives on ancient societies. The program is led by Prof. Dr. Johanna Fabricius and Prof. Dr. Hubert Mara (both from the Department of History and Cultural Studies at Freie Universität Berlin).

The Master Program includes a new profile "History of Knowledge in the Ancient World" with courses in English
on topics such as astral science, medicine, divination, mathematics, numeracy and beyond, provided by the
Institute for the History of Knowledge in the Ancient World, which is the homebase of
the project ZODIAC - Ancient Astral Science in Transformation (ERC)

***The Master's program is tuition-free for all students, irrespective of their country of origin.

Applications are due by August 15th.

Requirements:
Potential students need to have completed 60 ECTS in one of the following disciplines: Egyptology, Ancient Near Eastern Studies, Classical Archaeology, Prehistoric Archaeology, Near Eastern Archaeology, or Archaeoinformatics, or in the fields of Digital Humanities, the History of Knowledge and Science, or another discipline within Ancient Studies.

Applicants who did not obtain their degree in a German-taught degree program must demonstrate sufficient proficiency in the German language—specifically, the level required to comprehend lectures and specialized literature. In the present case, this entails language proficiency at the DSH 2 level, which is typically substantiated by a corresponding examination or test result. DSH 2 corresponds to level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Applicants who did not obtain their degree in an English-taught program must demonstrate sufficient proficiency in the English language—specifically, the level required to comprehend course instruction and specialized literature. In this context, this entails English proficiency at level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, which is typically substantiated by a corresponding examination or test result.

If you cannot meet the German language requirement at the DSH 2 level, there is also the option to study the MA program “Archaeology of the Ancient World (AAW)”

Archaeology of the Ancient World (AAW) is a two-year, full-time Master’s program taught in English. It brings together three disciplines – Prehistoric Archaeology, Near Eastern Archaeology, and Classical Archaeology – to approach the past of the Mediterranean region, Eurasia, and southwest Asia.

The program introduces you to a part of the world that has seen intense processes of transformation and abundant intercultural and inter-societal contacts during the last ten thousand years. You will acquire theoretical skills in dealing with scholarly arguments and practical skills in handling artefacts and analysing data.

As a consecutive program, AAW builds on knowledge about the past acquired through the study of ancient material culture during a Bachelor's program or through professional qualification. Acceptance to the program requires excellent English language skills (C1 level CEFR) and a Bachelor's degree with at least 60 credit points in archaeology-related courses.
