Dear Papy-list members,
The fourth edition of the International Itinerant Paleography School (IIPS), to be held in Venice, Padua and Florence from June 29 to July 5, 2024, is offering ten scholarships. The focus of the initiative will be on ancient and medieval books, inscriptions and archival documents. This year, 10 fellows will participate in the research-intensive training programme, which includes seminars, lectures and visits to libraries, museums and research institutes. IIPS is a comparative and transdisciplinary study project centred on materials produced and circulated in the Mediterranean area from Antiquity to the Middle Ages. These include papyri, ostraca, tablets, parchments and inscriptions in Greek, Latin, Arabic and Coptic. The programme has a twofold objective. First, the seminars and visits, conducted by a team of leading scholars from Italy, France and Greece, will offer a unique opportunity for international scientific training. Second, young scholars will acquire comprehensive experience in working with manuscripts, from the study and publication of texts to aspects of conservation and public display. They will engage with academics, librarians, archivists, conservators and technicians, allowing them to discuss a broad range of issues from a diachronic and comparative perspective, based on a wide variety of skills, fields of expertise and cultural models.
