Vastaus: PAPY - the list for papyrologists <papy at lists.hum.ku.dk>

Dear colleagues,
This year we welcome again advanced BA/MA/PhD students to the 7th Papyrology Summer School at Leiden University, from the 15th until the 26th of July 2024. Several courses will be offered this year:
Editing Greek Papyri
(Joanne Stolk and Yasmine Amory)
During this course, the students learn how to make a Greek papyrus edition. They hear all about the material characteristics of papyri, Greek palaeography and palaeographical dating, how to use digital and printed tools, reading symbols and abbreviations and how language and formulas are used in Greek documentary papyri. To bring their knowledge into practice, they individually study an unpublished papyrus fragment from the collection of the Leiden Papyrological Institute and prepare their own edition of this papyrus with the help of the teachers, papyrological tools and the papyrological library in Leiden. The students get the opportunity to finish their editions according to papyrological standards after the course and publish it in the upcoming volume of P.Leid.Inst. 3.
Introduction to Papyrology (1200 BCE – 800 CE)
(Ben Haring, Koen Donker van Heel, Joanne Stolk, Yasmine Amory, Margaretha Folmer, Jacques van der Vliet en Jelle Bruning)
In this course, students are introduced to the wide field of papyrology by a diverse range of papyrologists. Together we read Hieratic, Demotic, Aramaic, Greek, Latin, Coptic and Arabic papyri in translation and learn more about life in Egypt across different periods.
The Language of the Law in the Ancient Mediterranean
(Jan Gerrit Dercksen, Ben Haring, Koen Donker van Heel, Margaretha Folmer, Joanne Stolk and Quintijn Mauer)
Already early in human history we see how people in the Mediterranean started to record their business transactions or inheritances. By looking at this phenomenon during different periods from various angles across the Mediterranean, from the cuneiform sources in Babylonia to Hieratic and Demotic documents in Egypt, and from Jewish legalese to Roman law, the various teachers of this course aim to give an insight into how language was used to achieve this. And how and why language turned into legalese.
All three courses can be followed together or separately. Editing Greek Papyri is offered on campus only, while Introduction to Papyrology and The Language of the Law can also be followed online.
