The American Academy in Rome invites applications for the position of Director of the Classical Summer School, beginning in summer 2024, for a term of three years (2024–26). The deadline for applications is November 15, 2023.

The Classical Summer School, to be held next year from June 16 to July 19, is designed to provide qualified graduate students and middle school, high school, and college/university teachers with a well-founded understanding of the growth and development of the city of Rome through a careful study of material remains and literary sources.


The Classical Summer School was established in 1923 for high school teachers and graduate students of Latin, ancient history, and the classics. Over the years its audience has become more varied, welcoming college teachers and those working in archaeology and related fields. The program is particularly useful to those with few opportunities to visit Rome and underrepresented groups in classics more generally.
