Dear colleagues and friends,
The 76th session of the Société internationale Fernand De Visscher pour l’Histoire des Droits de
l’Antiquité shall take place at the University of Helsinki on August 22-26, 2023 with the theme:
Materiality and immateriality of ancient law
We would like to thank all of those who have submitted their proposals for presentations, I am happy to report that we have received a total of 151 excellent proposals. We have today opened the registration for the conference, the link to the registration is available at the conference website
https://www.helsinki.fi/en/conferences/sihda-2023 As part of the registration, you are able to reserve accommodation at the conference hotels and hostel with special rates.
The conference program is ready and available at the website, although the final order of the presentations will be decided only after registration closes. If you need to have your presentation at a certain date due to travel, please do let us know. The conference proceedings will start at 4 pm on Tuesday, August 22, with an opening panel at the Festive Hall of the University of Helsinki (Fabianinkatu 33, 00100 Helsinki). From there, we will go across the Senate Square to the welcome reception offered by the City of Helsinki at the City Hall. For security reasons, there will be a separate (free) registration for this event. On Wednesday, August 23, the scientific work will continue at 9 am with parallel sessions at the Faculty of Law in the Porthania Building (Yliopistonkatu 3, 00100 Helsinki), where parallel sessions will be held also on Thursday and Friday. That evening, we will have a concert by the choir Lain Huuto, a choir composed entirely of lawyers, followed by a reception at the Katajanokka Casino at 7 pm. As is customary, Thursday evening will be free, although we will have some small programs on offer, with a few sauna excursions for the adventurous and a city walk. On Friday, we will have the general assembly meeting, followed by the gala dinner at the historic Old Student House. On Saturday, beginning at 10.30, we will have a legal historical excursion to Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, with the cooperation of Hesi Siimets-Gross and Merike Ristikivi. We will be back by dinnertime (the ship arrives at 7.30 pm). We kindly remind that because we will be going to the old town of Tallinn, the excursion will involve walking on medieval cobblestones and thus we cannot guarantee accessibility in all sections of the excursion. I imagine that some may prefer to stay in Tallinn longer and not join us for the return journey.
I would recommend warmly to register early, not only because hotel rooms at the special rates are limited, but also to take advantage of the discounted early bird rates. We have sought to keep the rates as low as possible. The basic conference registration fee is set at 150 euro, which will rise to 200 euro on July 1st. This rate includes the scientific programme, the receptions and concert, and the lunches and coffees at the conference venue. The gala dinner ticket will be 95 euro and the excursion to Tallinn will cost 55 euro. Thus the full experience will be 300 euro until July 1st and 350 euro after that. For graduate students, the conference fee will be 75 euro, not including gala dinner and excursion. For accompanying persons, the fee of 100 euros includes the receptions and concert, and the lunches and coffees at the conference venue. Registration will close on August 1st.
We are looking forward to meeting you in Helsinki!
On behalf of the organizing committee,

Information regarding travel and hotels
As a capital city, Helsinki is well served with direct flights from most European capitals and major cities. Frequent ferries from Stockholm and Tallinn serve those traveling by train or car, there are also some direct ferries from Germany. For those traveling overland, ferries are best combined with a tour of Scandinavia or the Baltics. Because August is a major tourist season, we would recommend all to reserve hotels or other lodging as soon as possible.
We have made group reservations for participants which may be booked when the registration begins on April 1st, 2023. There are a limited number of rooms available for these discounted rates. The hotels are Solo Sokos Hotel Helsinki (a good quality hotel across the street from Porthania), single 189, double 209 euro per night, Hotel Arthur (also very close by, run by the YMCA), single 125, double 135 euro per night. For those on a budget, we have also reserved rooms at Eurohostel (a nice hostel at Katajanokka), single 91, double 102 euro per night.
The weather in August is usually mild and not too hot. There are ample opportunities for travel in Finland beyond Helsinki, see https://www.visitfinland.com/en/ for some suggestions. In addition to some picturesque towns, Finland has the largest wilderness areas in Europe, with a very beautiful archipelago and more lakes than you can think of (over one hundred thousand). One may tour the lake district around Savonlinna, renting a cabin by a lake to enjoy nature and silence, or stay closer by Helsinki, where there are historic villages such as Fiskars, where Huguenots from France settled. To see the archipelago, the best way is to travel by boat or ferry. The interisland ferries are mostly free. At the extreme end of the archipelago are the Åland Islands, a popular tourist destination and an autonomous area with an interesting legal status, which served by ferries from Turku and Helsinki. For those preferring a more urban experience, the gritty industrial town of Tampere, the old capital city Turku and the tiny wooden towns of Tammisaari and Porvoo are easily reached by train or by bus. Finland has the most heavy metal bands per capita in the world and the capital of heavy metal is the northern city of Oulu. Lapland, in the extreme North, offers vast expanses of natural beauty and is home to Sámi, the only indigenous people in Europe.
