Dear all,

---

The Chair of Ancient History at Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg, Germany, is inviting applications for

two Doctoral Researcher Positions

within the DFG-funded project Horizontal Binding Forces, State Regulation and Local Civil Society: the City of Rome and Western Asia Minor in the Late Republic (part of the broader project Locality and
Society: Horizontal Binding Forces in Antiquity). Principal Investigator is Prof. Dr. Rene Pfeilschifter. The two positions are available as of October 1, 2023, for a period of three years with 65% of the regular weekly working hours. Remuneration will be based on the Tarifvertrag für den öffentlichen Dienst der Länder (collective agreement for the public service of German federal states, TV-L).

The project investigates horizontal binding forces and self-governing groups for their importance for the cohesion of local societies (c. 150 B.C. to the turn of the era). It rests on the assumption that the quality of governance constellations in larger cities of the Roman Empire not only depended on state regulation and the efforts of elites, but crucially on the functioning of a civil society avant la lettre. The existing focus of scholars on vertical patronage relations will be balanced and corrected in the two case studies to be conducted.

The successful applicants will have the possibility to pursue a further academic qualification in the form of a dissertation by carrying out one such case study. The first one focuses on the capital city Rome, the second one on the Greek cities in the province of Asia. For more information on the approach of the broader project, see https://www.geschichte.uni-wuerzburg.de/institut/alte-geschichte/aktuelles.

The following qualifications are required: a university degree in a relevant field completed with grades well above average, a good command of Latin and Ancient Greek (Latinum and Graecum) as well as relevant modern languages, excellent writing proficiency in German or English, and the willingness to write a doctoral thesis in one of the two fields of research outlined above. In addition, the ability to work in a team and committed cooperation in an interdisciplinary research environment with Greek Philology and Old Testament Studies are expected.

The University of Würzburg is an equal opportunity employer. As such, we explicitly encourage applications from qualified women. Severely handicapped applicants will be given preferential consideration in the case of broadly equal suitability, ability and professional achievements.

Please send your application documents (concise letter of motivation, curriculum vitae, copies of certificates and diplomas, list of publications and list of given academic courses, if applicable) as a pdf file preferably by e-mail to Prof. Dr. Rene Pfeilschifter, Lehrstuhl für Alte Geschichte, Universität
Würzburg: sekretariat-alte-geschichte at uni-wuerzburg.de. The closing date for applications is May 15, 2023.
