The Heinz Heinen Kolleg brings together excellent international scholars whose research focuses on different forms of strong asymmetrical dependency and slavery in all historical periods before the 20th century, and all cultural contexts. It is part of the Bonn Center for Dependency and Slavery Studies (BCDSS) that hosts the Cluster of Excellence “Beyond Slavery and Freedom. Asymmetric Dependencies in Pre-modern Societies” funded by the German Excellence Strategy. The BCDSS approaches asymmetrical dependencies from antiquity to the present and across many regions in five different Research Areas. These form five different thematic and methodological angles. Each of these Research Areas draws on specific conceptual debates and approaches of the humanities and puts them to the test in order to arrive at a new social history of asymmetrical dependencies. For the academic year of 2021/2022 the BCDSS will put a thematic emphasis on Research Area C “Institutions, Norms and Practices”. Research Area C looks at the crossroads of norms and related institutions and practices, where dependency is created. The central fields of study are legislation and legal practice, establishing norms and social practice, as well as literacy and orality. The objective of this Research Area is to confront current slavery and dependency research with an institutional approach, which is supposed to bring together institutional economics and practice theory and to combine it with new debates on legal pluralism.

The Heinz Heinen Kolleg is calling for applications for 10 scholarships:
- two Junior Postdoctoral Fellows (max. 6 months after PhD) for up to 12 months;
- two Postdoctoral Fellows (postdocs, assistant and associate professors) for up to 12 months;
- two Senior Fellows (full professors) for up to 12 months;
- two Doctoral Fellows (about to finish their PhD) for up to 6 months;
- two Short Term Fellows for up to 2 months.

Even though the thematic focus of the academic year 2021/2022 at BCDSS will be on the topics of Research Area C, applications for Heinz Heinen Fellowships connected to and/or touching upon one of the other Research Areas are also welcome.

The fellowship comprises:
1. a monthly stipend of
a. € 1,550 for doctoral fellows;
b. € 2,400 for postdocs (up to four years after the dissertation),
c. € 3,000 for postdocs (more than four years after the dissertation, assistant/associate professors),
d. € 3,600 for full professors;
2. travel allowance (outward and return journey);
3. basic accommodation;
4. a working space including a desktop computer at the Bonn Center for Dependency and Slavery Studies;
5. the opportunity to organize a workshop in Bonn and apply for its funding;
6. support in organizational matters upon arrival;
7. support in finding day care for children.

d. detailed working plan until completion of the doctoral thesis;

f. the preferred time period to be spent in Bonn
2. the candidate's concise Curriculum Vitae
3. a list of publications (if applicable)
4. the university degree certificate
5. copy of admission as a doctoral student at the relevant faculty or a current enrolment receipt
6. two letters of recommendation – one of them by the supervisor (sent separately to application at dependency.uni-bonn.de<mailto:application at dependency.uni-bonn.de>)

Postdoctoral Fellows

a. the candidate's academic interest in the field of dependency and slavery studies;
b. a project description;

2. the candidate's concise Curriculum Vitae

4. the PhD certificate

Senior Fellows
