Dear all,

The first Helsinki Research on the Ancient World (HelRAW) seminar of 2021 takes place on February 1st with Rubén Montoya González and the talk “A globalised visual culture? Towards regional geographies of Hispano-Roman mosaics”.

Abstract: In recent decades, the study of Hispano-Roman mosaics has moved from a primarily descriptive, iconographic, centre-periphery approach towards a theoretical one in which the provincial contexts of manufacturing commission and display of mosaics have been further investigated. Among other theoretical frameworks, globalization and glocalization have allowed for a better understanding of how a seemingly global visual culture was locally adopted, therefore breaking traditional boundaries between ‘art in the centre’ and ‘art in the periphery’, unveiling the local and provincial character of visual culture. This paper aims to contribute to such a vibrant theoretical debate by analysing four iconographic types evidenced in Hispano-Roman mosaics through the lens of the glocalization framework. Adopting V. Roudometof’s definition of glocalization as ‘globalization refracted through local lenses’, I will investigate these tessellated pavements within their wider geographical and sociocultural contexts, therefore unveiling their regional significance and the existence of regional visual koinés.
