Ahmad Al-Jallad: “How and why the Nabataean script dominated the Arabian Peninsula in Late Antiquity”
Professor Ahmad Al-Jallad (Leiden University) specializes in the early history of Arabic and North Arabian. He has done research on Arabic from the pre-Islamic period based on documentary sources, the Graeco-Arabica, language classification, North Arabian epigraphy, and historical Semitic linguistics. He has written the first grammar of Safaitic, a corpus of Ancient North Arabian inscriptions from northern Jordan and southern Syria: An Outline of the Grammar of the Safaitic Inscriptions (Brill, 2015, 2nd ed. 2018).
Marijn van Putten: “The language of the Quran: what is it, and how do we know?”
Marijn van Putten is a linguist at Leiden University who specializes in Arabic and Berber historical linguistics. His current post-doctoral research project “Before the Grammarians: Arabic in the formative period of Islam” aims to reconstruct the language of the early Islamic period, using sources such as early Islamic papyri, Quranic documents and transcriptions in non-Arabic scripts. He is currently working specifically on the reconstruction of Quranic Arabic as it can be deduced from the Quranic Consonantal Text.
