Four-year PhD fellowship at the Department of History, Ghent University
In the Department of History at Ghent University, a four-year PhD fellowship is available as part of the research project Civic market buildings and their role in economic life in Hellenistic and Roman Asia Minor, financed by the Research Foundation Flanders (FWO). Though administratively based at Ghent, this interdisciplinary (historical/archaeological) project entails a collaboration between the research group Ancient History at Ghent University and the Sagalassos Archaeological Research Project at the University of Leuven.
The project focusses on the economic role and function of civic market buildings, i.e. one-, two- or three-storied colonnaded porticoes with attached outbuildings often containing multiple workshops, storage spaces and other facilities and located on or near the city’s central market square (agora), that are a typical feature of Greek cities in Hellenistic and Roman Asia Minor. Despite their relatively abundant attestation (including a recent find at Sagalassos in Pisidia) and clear commercial focus (also evident from written sources in which they are mentioned), these buildings have so far mostly been studied for their architectural features alone. This project will be the first systematic study of civic market buildings, focusing on both their physical aspects and on the socio-economic and institutional context of which they were part, in the cities of Hellenistic and Roman Asia Minor, based on an integrated and theoretically informed analysis of the available archaeological and written evidence.
You possess a good Master’s degree in History (specialization Ancient History), Classics (specialization Ancient History or Classical Archaeology) or Classical Archaeology and a good working knowledge of ancient Greek and Latin. You are interested in the study of the ancient (Hellenistic and Roman) economy and in ancient urban history and archaeology. You are able to work independently, whilst also a team player. Your tasks include: completion of a PhD thesis within four years, (co-)publication of research results as journal papers or reports, participation in field work at Sagalassos, the (co-)organization of workshops, and limited amounts of teaching-assistance or assistance with other research- or service-related tasks within the two research groups and at the Ghent History Department. Acquaintance with Greek epigraphy of the Hellenistic and Roman periods and possession of some archaeological field experience constitute advantages.
We offer you the possibility to work as a member of two large and internationally renowned research groups focused on Greek and Roman social, economic and political history and the archaeology of eastern Roman urbanism respectively, whilst being based at Ghent in one of the leading history departments in Belgium, further training in the Ghent Doctoral School, and the opportunity to participate in a first-rate archaeological excavation project at Sagalassos. For more information on the research group Ancient History at Ghent and the Sagalassos Archaeological Research Project see http://www.ancienthistory.ugent.be/en and http://www.sagalassos.be/
The successful candidate is expected to start in January 2017, early February at the latest.
