On May 8-10, 2014 (Thursday till Saturday), the Library of the University of Tartu (Estonia) will host an international conference „Humanist Greek in Early Modern Europe. Learned Communities between Antiquity and Contemporary Culture“ on Humanist Greek. This field of study focuses on texts by academic non-Byzantine writers who from the Renaissance onwards have composed poems and prose in ancient atticising Greek.
Although the notion "Humanist Greek" has been in use for decades, these texts have been quite neglected for a long time and for the most part remained on the margins of Neo-Latin studies. In order to fill this gap, Tartu University Library will hold a conference, focusing on humanist Greek poetry and prose production (including rhetoric as well as scientific treatises) from its emergence in Western Europe in Italy and its practice in French and German universities to its arrival on the Baltic coast. Although the main focus will be the production of humanist Greek texts in Northern Europe and especially in the Baltic Sea area, its broader framework (the role of Byzantine scholars, study and teaching of ancient Greek language and literature as well as translating from Greek and editing Greek texts) will be regarded briefly as well.
We are very pleased to announce that professors Dieter Harlfinger and Walther Ludwig (Hamburg University) have agreed to be our keynote speakers. A panel discussion on future collaboration on Humanist Greek text corpora will be held. The languages of the conference are English (preferred) and German; we also intend to publish the papers, which can be in English, German, French or Italian (or Humanist Greek).
During the conference an exhibition of humanist Greek prints and manuscripts from Tartu University Library will be open; it will also be possible to enjoy the international literary festival Prima Vista (May 7-11, 2014).
The conference is financed by the Estonian Research Council’s project PUT 132 “Humanist Greek in Early Modern Estonia and Livonia: a bridge to modern and ancient European culture“ (2013-2016).
