Dear Colleagues,

We have the pleasure of informing you about the forthcoming International
Conference of the International Society for the Study of European Ideas
(ISSEI). It will be held in cooperation with the University of Helsinki,
July 28 - August 2, 2008. The theme of the conference is:

Language and the Scientific Imagination

http://issei2008.haifa.ac.il/

It is rare nowadays to see any fruitful dialogue between the Humanities and
Science. In the first half of the twentieth century philosophers like
Russell and Whitehead, following the Kantian tradition, were the main
interlocutors in the debate about modern science. By the end of the
twentieth century, under the influence of Nietzsche, Heidegger, and
Wittgenstein, the dialogue of philosophy had switched from science to
literature. This dialogue within the humanities eventually issued in
Cultural Studies. What is needed is a new approach of the Humanities to
Science and Technology. The "two cultures" depend on each other, for human
beings give sense to their lives both by doing (Science) and by telling
stories (Language).

The 11th conference of ISSEI, to be held at the University of Helsinki in
2008, invites scholars from various disciplines such as History, Politics,
Literature, Art, Philosophy, Science, and Religion, to examine and redefine
the scope of interdisciplinary dialogue.

The conference is divided into five sections:

1. History, Geography, Science

2. Politics, Economics, Law

3. Education, Sociology, Women's Studies

4. Literature, Art, Music, Theatre, Culture

5. Religion, Philosophy, Psychology, Language

Colleagues interested in organizing a workshop on a topic from their
discipline related to the general conference topic are invited to submit a
one-page proposal to:

Ezra Talmor
Kibbutz Nacshonim
DN Merkaz, 73190
Israel

Email: ISSEI at nachshonim.org.il

The deadline for submitting a proposal for a workshop is May 31, 2007.

This will be the 11th Conference of the International Society for the Study
of European Ideas (ISSEI) which was founded in 1984 by the editors of The
European Legacy (called at that time History of European Ideas) at the
conference center in Bellagio, Italy.

The previous ISSEI conferences were held in 1988 - Amsterdam; 1990 -
Leuven; 1992 - Aalborg;  1994 - Graz;  1996 - Utrecht;  1998 - Haifa;
2000 - Bergen; 2002 - Aberystwyth; 2004 - Pamplona; 2006 - University of
Malta.

In 1996 the Library Journal, New York, chose The European Legacy as one of
the ten best journals in the USA.

Guidelines for Chairs:

1.. The Promotion of the workshop is done by the Chair in collaboration
with the ISSEI central office.

2.. A workshop session with 8 to 10 participants is 4 hours long (with a
half hour coffee break). Workshops with more than 8 - 10 participants are
allowed two sessions.

3.. Papers are to be presented rather than read. The length of time for
presentation of papers is 15 minutes maximum.

4.. Papers should not exceed 3000 words, or ten double-spaced pages,
including Notes. (Notes need not be included in the presented papers, but
should be presented for the final selection of papers for the Proceedings).

5.. The chair should send copies of abstracts to all the participants of
the workshop, so they have an idea of the kind of papers that will be
presented and can prepare themselves for their discussion.

6.. Chairs are responsible for selecting and editing the papers
recommended for publication in the Proceedings.

7.. Workshop chairs may present a paper in their own and/or in other
workshops.
