Joint UNA Tanzania, UNA Finland and WFUNA Workshop:

Gender, Sustainability and the Empowerment of Marginalized Groups

from 23rd to 27th of September 2013, Zanzibar, Tanzania

Objective of the workshop

The workshop aims at increasing the capacity of UNAs and other civil society organizations to take part in advocacy work alongside the marginalized groups. The workshop is based interactive methods of engagement, and it integrates the use of participatory video to the tools of engagement and empowerment.

In addition to deepening the collective understanding of the participants on sustainability and the empowerment, the specific focus of the workshop is on gender and human rights.

Facilitators

Mr. Doug Reeler comes from Community Development Resource Association<http://www.cdra.org.za> (CDRA), Cape Town,  where he has worked for the past 12 years. He is a seasoned development facilitator, action researcher and writer with a special interest in horizontal learning and the use of creative methods. He is also one of the initiators of the Barefoot Guide<http://www.barefootguide.org/> series and Barefoot Guide Connection online community. Relevant materials will be provided to the participants of the course, and are also available at Barefoot Guide's website.

Mr. Gareth Benest is the Director of Programmes at InsightShare.<http://www.insightshare.com>  Gareth has worked as a participatory video facilitator for over nine years working with communities across Africa, Asia, the South Pacific and the UK. Gareth is Director of Programmes for InsightShare with responsibility for running various international programmes across numerous themes and countries.

Ms. Jemimah Maitei Kerenge shares her experiences of doing participatory community video with Maasai in Kenya on indigenous people and climate change.

Venue

The workshop will take place in La Madrugada Beach Resort<http://lamadrugadaresort.com/> in Zanzibar. Accommodation is organized for the group, so please do not book directly, but contact the organizers.

Costs

Participants are required to cover their own travel and accommodation costs. A workshop fee of 100€ covers for the conference package (coffee/tea and fruits two times a day plus hot lunch).

Participation grants covering travel and accommodation and the workshop fee, are available to selected participants from developing countries on the basis of applications.

How to apply?

A maximum of 35 participants will be admitted to the course. The selection will be done on the basis of an application and a motivation letter showing how you intend to share the results of the training with your background organization/community/network.

One-page applications stating the motivation and background of the applicant are to be sent by 3rd of September 2013 to Programme Officer, Ms. Mumina Jane of the UN Association of Tanzania at unatzsecretariat (at) gmail.com.
