Internship related to the Negotiations of a global legally binding instrument on mercury

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system's designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action.

Mercury has been identified as a pollutant of global concern, and, in 2009, Governments agreed to negotiate a global legally binding instrument to reduce risks to human health and the environment from anthropogenic releases of mercury. To date, four negotiating sessions and a range of intersessional meetings have been held. The fifth session of the negotiating committee will meet in Geneva in January 2013 to conclude the negotiations.

The Internship
Under the supervision of the Coordinator, Mercury Negotiations Team, the intern will support the preparations for the fifth session of the intergovernmental negotiating (INC5) scheduled to take place in Geneva from 13 to 18 January 2013.

This includes

1)Receiving and reviewing completed registration forms for INC5 and preparatory regional meetings and entering information into the relevant databases, ensuring accuracy in entry, and keeping track of current registrations to advice the team of the level of interest, and also of any high-level participants (Ministers, Ambassadors etc) who have registered.

2)Assisting in the preparation of guidance and speaking notes for the INC chair, particularly to ensure consistent presentation of notes for different sections of the document;

3)Assisting in preparing briefing notes, speeches and other material for use by the INC Chair and UNEP senior staff during INC5 and other preparatory meetings as appropriate;

4)Assisting in logistic and practical arrangements for and during INC5 and preparatory regional meetings.

5)Assisting during the meeting in the management of document flow and version control to ensure documents are considered at an appropriate time to be adopted as final versions by the committee.

6) Providing other assistance to the Mercury Negotiations Team during INC5, including participation in preparing bureau meetings, briefing notes and other material for use by the INC Chair.
