Dag Hammarskjöld remembered
The Values of UNs Second Secretary General Dag Hammarskjöld and the Future of the UN
Hanasaari – the Swedish-Finnish Cultural Centre
Thursday March 24th 2011, 13.00 -16.00 pm
Dag Hammarskjöld was the second Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1953. He died in a plane crash on 18 September 1961 while seeking a peaceful solution for the Congo. He represented and shaped the ethics of an international civil servant, advocated dialogue with others and established the first United Nations Peacekeeping Operation under direct UN command. Hammarskjöld was a person of utmost integrity and much respected for his honesty. He remains the most outstanding Secretary-General representing the United Nations in its efforts towards global governance so far.
Half a century after Hammarskjöld’s untimely death, this Hanaforum brings together international civil servants, policy makers and civil society to discuss the challenges of a future United Nations and to reflect upon the spirit and values of Hammarskjöld in their relevance for today and tomorrow.
