Hi all,
please note the forthcoming course "Environmental stresses in plants and cyanobacteria" KABI5064 2 ECTS (lectures and seminar) + 4 ECTS (laboratory practicals) for undergraduate and PhD students.
Lectures and seminar: On day 1, lectures on different fields of stress biology (e.g. temperature, salt, light, pathogen and oxidative stress) will be given, and on day 2 the students will present seminars. Credits will be awarded for attendance at all lectures and for completion of a seminar on a specific field of stress biology.
Laboratory practicals: Induction of environmental stresses in cyanobacteria, monitoring induction of stress marker genes at transcriptional and translational levels. Methods learned during the course: cyanobacterial cultures, protein analyses (isolation and quantification of proteins, SDS-PAGE, Western blotting), transcript analysis (isolation and quantification of RNA, agarose gel electrophoresis, Northern blotting including preparation of radioactive probes, autoradiography), preparation of figures and reports. 4 credits will be awarded for active participation in practicals and completion of the reports.
Language: English
Teachers: Taina Tyystjärvi, Paula Mulo, Kaisa Häkkilä and Saijaliisa Kangasjärvi
Registration: Registration to Paula Mulo (pmulo at utu.fi) or Taina Tyystjärvi (taityy at utu.fi) by 12th September. Course schedule will be agreed with the students on Mon 12th September at 12.15 in the negotiation room of Molecular Plant Biology (LT-talo II, 2nd floor).
