Masters thesis or summer worker’s project

The Cell Adhesion and Cancer laboratory is investigating basic principles of cancer progression in respect to uncontrolled proliferation and motility of the cancer cells. Main focus of our research are integrins, transmembrane cell surface receptors, which are highly important in cell adhesion processes.

We identified the small GTPase Rab21 as a direct binding partner of the cytoplasmic tail of alpha-integrins. Rab21 plays an essential role in the traffic of integrin molecules, thereby regulating cell migration as well as cell division.

Project description:

To understand the mechanisms how Rab21 regulates integrin traffic in more detail, we would like to identify proteins downstream of Rab21, which regulate vesicular processes.

The project will contain various biochemical (protein purification, in vitro interaction analysis, mass spectrometry, Western Blotting) and cell biological (cell culture, siRNA technique, cell migration and trafficking assays, microscopy) techniques as well detailed literature research on the potential screening hits.

Requirements:

The project can be carried out as a Masters thesis or as a summer job for already graduated students and should ideally take at least 4 months in the second case.

We are looking for motivated candidates for this diversified and challenging project. Direct supervision is provided by a post-doc of the lab. Nevertheless it is expected that the candidate is also able to plan and carry out his/her experiments independently to some extent.

Application deadline: 31.5.09

For further information or direct application please send an e-mail to:

The official deadline is already this weekend, so interested people can of course just send a very short e-mail to Dr. Veltel, if then don't have a complete application until then.
