Opportunities for Pro Gradu studies in Proteomics at the Turku Centre
for Biotechnology, BioCity Turku

The following projects exist in medical biology:

1. Discovery based profiling of respiratory virus infections in children
The study involves proteomic profiling of nasal mucus in rhinovirus and
other respiratory virus infections in children, as the pathogenesis of
these virus infections has not been characterised in detail. We will use
a suit of proteomic profiling technologies, mainly focused around the
use of mass spectrometry.
(Collaborators: Ville Peltola and Olli Ruuskanen, Department of
Paediatrics, Turku University Hospital, Jukka Corander, Åbo Akademi
University)

2. Detection and visualisation of adenoviral particles and viral gene
products in tissues by mass spectrometry
This study is part of an ongoing project focusing on the development of
targeted gene therapy for cardiovascular disease and cancer at the Turku
Centre for Biotechnology, and involves the analysis of heart tissue
samples by MS as well as a new strategy for the quantitative analysis
of the proteins products in tissues.
(Collaborators: Mikko Savontaus group - Gene Therapy at the Department
of Medicine, University of Turku)

3. Functional annotation of ERG, HDAC1 and AR pathways.
The research proposal here targets quantitative protein interaction
analysis of ERG, HDAC1 and AR, as knowledge of the networks and
interaction partners could provide promising candidates that would act
as targets for therapeutic approaches. The Pro Gradu work will focus on
the temporal and spatial quantitative proteomics of the three key
proteins by employing a new strategy combining affinity tags with
concurrent in-vivo visualisation tags.
(Collaborators: Nees Matthias and Olli Kallioniemi, VTT Medical
Biotecnology, Turku)

Who are you?
You should have skills in any of the following areas: biology,
biomedicine, biochemistry, biotechnology. English written and oral
proficiency is a prerequisite, as well as a healthy attitude towards
collaborative research, drive for excellence and enthusiasm for
biomedical research!

When to start?
Starting date is flexible and will be negotiated.

What should you do?
Please send your CV and references if available, as well as any other
information you think is useful to Garry Corthals
(garry.corthals at btk.fi). Indicate which project you are interested in.
