Planning processes for sustainable urban form<br>
<br>
One important subject in the debate on sustainable urban planning has been the compact city theories, policies and practices (Jenks & Burgess, 2000; De Roo & Miller, 2000; Parolek et al, 2008). Advocacy of the compact city as more sustainable urban form rises
the importance of the role of spatial planning and planning policies in the achievement of sustainable urban development. Nevertheless, compact city strategy has also been criticized for its negative impacts on both environment and living conditions of the
citizens (Neuman 2005). Further on, Neuman argues that “…..the compact city is neither a necessary or sufficient condition for a city to be sustainable and that the attempt to make cities more sustainable only by using urban form strategies is counterproductive”.
The impact of urban form on the elements of sustainability such as social accessibility and equity, health, economic performance, ecology, pollution and transport have attracted most interest both academically and in practice. This debate has also a long history
but tends to get into an impasse. The debate has also and almost exclusively addressed the product, the shaped sustainable urban form, but questions on the production or the shaping of the sustainable urban form have been more marginalized. Therefore, a need
of addressing planning and shaping processes of sustainable urban development is important.

In the hope of shedding some light on the processes of planning and the production of sustainable urban forms, the Swedish School of Planning at the Blekinge Institute of Technology in Karlskrona/Sweden, organizes a seminar on November 7-8, 2013. The seminar
is organized under the auspice of the Nordic Network of Urban Morphology, which was established in 2006 to promote research and practice in the field of urban planning and design. Four international experts in the field of urban planning are invited to give
lecture on the processes of shaping sustainable urban forms. <br>
<br>
The seminar will address this issue in two sessions:<br>
Urban transformations and dynamisms – Theory and practice<br>
Governance and planning <br>
<br>
The seminar and the two sessions are open to doctoral students for paper presentation. Doctoral students are therefore invited to submit abstracts on the themes proposed.
<br>
<br>
The deadline for submitting abstracts and registering is September 1, 2013. Abstracts should be sent to

Accepted doctoral students are notified by September 10th.<br>

Abstracts should be 300-500 words in length and set out the topic as well as method of investigation and (when possible) final or preliminary conclusions.<br>

Accepted doctoral students are offered free participation in the seminar. <br>
<br>
The Swedish School of Planning at BTH is also able to offer accepted students accommodation in Karlskrona (shared rooms, youth hostel) at no cost.

The number of places at the seminar is limited. <br>
<br>
A preliminary programme of the seminar can be requested by email.<br>
<br>
Established in 1989, Blekinge Institute of Technology (BTH) in Karlskrona, Sweden, has developed into Sweden’s leading institution for educating urban and spatial planners. The Swedish School of Planning at BTH runs six programmes (BSc and MSc) in spatial planning
and faculty members undertake research on a wide range of topics in the field of planning.<br>

Karlskrona is located in south-east Sweden and is a UNESCO World Heritage city of approx 65 000 inhabitants. Karlskrona is easily accessible by direct train from Copenhagen/Malmö/Lund, as well as by plane from Stockholm or ferry from Gdansk in Poland</span></p>
