Life on a Leaf Residency in Turku, Finland – call for applications for 2026!

Are you looking for an inspiring place to conduct research in peace and quiet, or a base to carry out case studies in Finland? Apply now for a 2–6 month residency between 1 January and 31 December 2026. The deadline for applications is 28 May 2025.

The Life on a Leaf Residency is intended for artists or researchers whose work focuses on urban spaces or the built environment. Fields of art are not limited. Possible areas of research include art research, architecture, urban planning, urban studies and cultural studies. The residency is intended for independent work.

The residence itself, a leaf-shaped house also named Life on a Leaf, is a complete work of art, designed by Jan-Erik Andersson in collaboration with architect Erkki Pitkäranta. The house challenges the relationship between architecture and art.

It is run by the Life on a Leaf Association, which aims to promote collaboration between art, architecture, academic research and business to create an urban environment that fosters imagination and creativity. This is a non-profit activity.

It offers one artist or researcher (or couple) the opportunity to live and focus on artistic or scientific work in a unique and inspiring environment.

The Life on a Leaf building is located in Hirvensalo, approximately six kilometres from the centre of Turku. It is situated on a spacious plot bordering a natural forest. There are good public transport and bicycle connections to central Turku.

Residencies can be applied for between two and six months. The desired schedule should be included in the application. Rent is €630 per month (including electricity and internet), plus a monthly water fee of €20 per person. The residency does not include financial support for artists or researchers.

Application requirements for researchers:

- The applicant must hold a PhD.

- The applicant’s research activities must relate to urban space or the built environment.

- The applicant must collaborate with at least one Finnish university (e.g. as a visiting researcher). They must also indicate a contact person from at least one of the following universities or polytechnics in Turku: the University of Turku, Åbo Akademi University, Turku University of Applied Sciences or Novia University of Applied Sciences.

- The application must include a summary of the research plan (maximum 4 pages), presenting the work planned for the residency period.

- A CV (max. 5 pages) and a list of publications must be attached to the application.
