In the last decades, cultural facilities and cultural heritage have been more and more considered as drivers for urban regeneration, for the revitalization of public space and local economic activities. Of course, a simplistic view of such complex issue in urban transformation and place-making should be discarded from both a theoretical and practical point of view. In this lecture Davide Ponzini will consider one case study in the city of Baltimore and a number of other examples in order to argue that cultural policy and urban planning can mix and generate strategies that are both open to participation of multiple actors and effective in enhancing central places. However, these strategies can potentially lead to unintended urban effects, such as spoiling the cultural value of place, limiting the use of public space to given populations and eventually fostering gentrification too. The lecture will put forth a complex and critical view on urban transformation and it will provide international ground and open the discussion regarding Turku.

Davide Ponzini (PhD) is Associate Professor of Urban Planning at Politecnico di Milano. His research focuses on planning theory, urban and cultural policy. He has been a visiting scholar at Yale University, Johns Hopkins University, Columbia University and Sciences Po Paris. His research work has been extensively published in international journals and books. Co-author (with Pier Carlo Palermo) of the book: Place-making and Urban Development: New Challenges for Planning and Design, Routledge, London 2015; and (with the photographer Michele Nastasi) of the book: STARCHITECTURE.
