YTK started the summer school in 1995 under the auspices of the International Federation of Housing and Planning (IFHP, founded by Ebenezer Howard in 1913). Its key ideas are problem-based learning and close collaboration between international students, young professionals and experienced planners and urban designers. Early driver was professor Ranko Radovic from Belgrade. The course is organised in co-operation with Aalto University, SFHP, the city of Helsinki and other Finnish cities.

Over the years, the students have done projects in Porvoo, Jyväskylä, Turku, Vantaa, Rauma and Seinäjoki.
