Hi everyone,
On Friday 8.10.2010 at 8.40 (room B2033 ICT-building) Mr. Jussi Oksanen
will give his Master Thesis presentation titled:
"Screening the possibility to productize a self-powered cottage heater
from electrical and practical point of view" (In Finnish: "KÄYTÄNNÖN
SELVITYS MAHDOLLISUUDESTA TUOTTEISTAA SÄHKÖISESTI OMAVARAINEN
MÖKKILÄMMITIN")
Please feel free to come and listen to the presentation. Jussi has done
practical work in industry by developing an new type of a product for a
company. The project was interesting in both technical as well as
product development point of view.
The abstract of the Master thesis can be found below.
BR, Arho
"Utilizing the thermoelectric phenomena to produce electricity have been
considered for approximately 200 years. Still, the technology has not
made its breakthrough. The main reasons are the lack of ideas where to
utilize it efficiently, the poor designs, low efficiency of the
thermoelectric generators (TEG) and the price. The reason why the tech-
nology is reasonable to use now in the cottage heaters is the unusually
good circumstances. TEGs generate their electricity from the heat flow
and temperature difference. The bigger the temperature difference in
certain limits, the more electricity can be produced. The cottage heater
is typically used from late autumn to early spring when cold
air can used to cool the cold side of the TEG.
Before the invention can be made into a functional product, the assembly
of the TEG to the surface of the cottage heater includes many
variables that need to be fully controlled. Controlling the
variables is costly as well. Thus, the manufacturing costs need to be
low in order for the customer to be willing to buy the electrically
self-powered heater. In any case, customers require that the heaters are
electrically self-powered or power generating. Hence, there is a good
possibility to manufacture profitable heater products with added TEGs’."
