Welcome to our third ELBOW Talk of the Season 2 by Doctoral Researcher Aino Jämsä (University of Turku). Abstract of the talk below.

The Body of a Snake in the Early 20th-Century Finland

The human-snake encounters depicted in historical sources often resulted in the snake losing its life in early 20th century Finland. The newspapers of that time reported on conflicts particularly between humans and venomous adders. In this talk, I will trace the various meanings attached to killing a snake from the perspective of the snake’s body. The killed snakes were, among other things, presented as trophies, used as a means to ward off other snakes, or prepared as medicine. I will complement the newspapers with oral history sources and explore how paying attention to the body of a snake highlights the complexity of human-snake encounters in the past.
