Abstract
”Wandering Womb in Rural Ostrobothnia”

Modersjukan (‘mother or womb-illness’) is a condition described as anxiety or depression in the charm tradition in Swedish-speaking Ostrobothnia during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Despite its name suggesting a connection to womb, it can affect both men and women. This affliction is often attributed to sorrow, hard work, or misfortunes. A more severe form of modersjukan is klōen, described as a worm living inside each person. However, scientific knowledge did not recognize a condition in which a person had swallowed a serpentine. Physicians considered these individuals to suffer from hysteria or hypochondria and sent them back home. At home, vernacular healers tried to cure them with charms that instructed the womb to stand still and return to its place. This paper examines modersjukan as a symptom cluster described by both vernacular and medical authorities. The main question I seek to answer is how the vernacular and medical knowledge of this symptom cluster affected each other.
