How do we narrate queer pasts and how are queer pasts intertwined with national histories? Are there national differences – and what is the role of transnational connections? Welcome to address these and other questions concerning queer histories in the Nordic countries and beyond in our international morning seminar!

Speakers

Justin Bengry is Director of the Centre for Queer History at Goldsmiths, University of London where he convenes the world’s first MA in Queer History. He was lead researcher on Historic England’s Pride of Place project, which mapped England’s LGBTQ+ heritage; postdoctoral researcher on the Queer Beyond London, a project that centred queer lives and experiences beyond the capital; and co-lead on the Queer Pandemic oral history project to record LGBTQ+ experiences of the Covid-19 pandemic and create the largest queer oral history archive of the pandemic. Justin is the co-editor most recently (with Matt Cook and Alison Oram) of Locating Queer Histories: Places and Traces Across the UK.

Íris Ellenberger is an associate professor of Social Studies at the University of Iceland. She has a PhD in history and her research interests include queer history, history of sexuality, transcultural history and queer pedagogy. She leads the research project From Sexual Outlaws to Model Citizens (funded by the Icelandic Centre for Research) and the mobility project Queering National Histories (funded by NOS-HS)

Tone Hellesund is professor of Cultural Studies at the University of Bergen. Her main research interests are gender, sexuality and intimacy in the past and present. Professor Hellesund is currently involved in the research project NordiQueer – A Nordic Queer Revolution? and the project leader for the project QUEERDOM  researching queer domesticities and intimacies in Norway 1842–1972.

Elsi Hyttinen is adjunct professor in Finnish literature at the University of Turku. She has taught widely in Finnish literary history, feminist criticism and queer literary studies, and she is currently working on a book on 1910s Finnish literature from a queer studies perspective. She is one of the founding members of the Queering National Histories Network.

Michael Nebeling Petersen is associate professor in Gender Studies at the Center for Gender, Sexuality and Difference at the University of Copenhagen. He has especially studied homosexual culture and citizenship, new technologies of reproduction and kinship as well as digital media and mediated cultures of intimacy – with a firm interest on the formations of and intersections between sexuality, gender, whiteness, and national belonging. Currently, he is PI for the collaborative project The Cultural History of AIDS in Denmark, that examines how AIDS emerged, became signified and became embedded in Danish culture.
