The Baltic Connections 2023 will take place at the University of Helsinki, Finland, from June 7 to 9. It is hosted by the University of Helsinki and the discipline of Economic and Social History here. As with the earlier conferences in Helsinki and Jyväskylä, we aim to bring together scholars working on comparative, economic, social, global, and other types of history and related social sciences to address various “East- West” historical processes and events as well as comparative and transnational analysis, including at the Baltic region, Europe, and the world. Potential topics include but are not limited to trade, migration, comparative development, international political economy and the diffusion and transplantation of institutions, ideas and cultural influences. Moreover, we want to promote interdisciplinary encounters and discussions, with the goal of bringing together scholars working in Western, Nordic, Central and East European, Baltic, and other universities. We are open to proposals that incorporate new digital technologies and ideas for roundtables.

The fourth Riitta Hjerppe Lecture in Social Science History will be given by Price Fishback (University of Arizona). Further solid keynotes will be delivered by Kateřina Lišková (Masaryk University), and Antero Holmila (University of Jyväskylä).

The deadline for proposals is February 28, 2023. In addition to individual papers, proposals for whole three to four paper panels are appreciated. The participants will be notified of acceptance on a rolling basis and on March 30 at the latest. Proposals can be submitted online (preferred) or by sending email to balticsocsciencehist at gmail.com.

The conference hosts a session track on History of Technology and Industry organized by the Finnish Society for the History of Technology. The session track accepts paper and session proposals about all aspects of history of technology and industry but focuses especially on the theme of transnational and regional histories in the Nordic and Baltic areas. To submit to this track, please submit online (preferred) or email balticsocsciencehist+tech at gmail.com. Moreover, the Finnish Quarterly for History of Technology, Tekniikan Waiheita, offers conference participants the possibility to submit their papers for fast-track consideration in the journal.

The Scandinavian Economic History Review is also offering the possibility for participants at the conference to submit their papers for fast-track consideration for publication. Please remember to note that you are submitting for the fast track when you apply for the conference. An initial screening will be made, based on the submitted abstract. If an abstract is accepted for the fast track, authors will be required to submit a full version of the paper through the SEHR online submission platform (https://www.tandfonline.com/loi/sehr20) two weeks before the conference at the latest. The papers will be presented at separate “fast track sessions”, where an SEHR editor will be present and provide feedback on your work. The authors of the very best submissions will be invited to revise their papers based on these comments within three weeks, and the resubmissions will then be subject to the usual peer review process, with an initial decision made by the end of September 2023. Please note, that the fast track does not in any way preclude other papers from being submitted to the Review.

The conference will be held in-person, and we cannot guarantee a hybrid option for participation. Conference fees will be 170 euros for full registration and 80 euros for graduate students. The organizing institutions consist of University of Helsinki, University of Jyväskylä, the Finnish Society for the History of Technology, and the Finnish Economic History Association.
