The Faculty of Arts (University of Helsinki) invites applications for a

Postdoctoral Researcher

to fixed-term employment from September 1, 2023 to February 28, 2027. The position is in the Department of Philosophy, History and Art Studies.
The postdoctoral researcher will be employed for 42 months to conduct independent research within the European Research Council-funded research project Medical Electricity, Embodied Experiences, and Knowledge Construction in Europe and the Atlantic World, c.1740–1840 (ELBOW). Lead by Dr Soile Ylivuori, ELBOW uses medical electricity as a case study to investigate how patients’ embodied and experiential knowledge influenced the construction of scientific knowledge. For more details on the project, see the project website.
The postdoctoral researcher will be a member of a four-person project team. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to two work packages:

 	Investigating the embodied experiences of electro-medical patients and examining how embodiment conditioned the patients’ feelings, experiences, and epistemological understandings. By paying close attention to gendered and intersectional differences, the aim is to discover whose experiences were considered to be reliable, valuable, and generalizable in the context of scientific knowledge construction.
 	Investigating the nature and popularity of the onto-epistemologies on which medical electricity was based. Medical electricity as a practical manifestation of a vitalist understanding of matter in everyday life provides an exceptional window into popular epistemological beliefs, allowing an investigation of how patients’ epistemological understandings influenced their conceptualisations of their embodied experiences, and vice versa.

The postdoctoral researcher’s individual project can be fine-tuned according to their interests and experience, but it should lie within the project’s scope and concentrate on German source material between the years 1740 and 1840. The appointee should be an expert in history and philosophy of science and medicine and/or intellectual and cultural history, with extensive experience on working on eighteenth-century German sources. They will publish original work on their project and contribute to the publications and research activities of the research team.

SELECTION CRITERIA

The appointee must have a doctoral degree in history, history of science, or a related field, as well as publication record that shows independent research and writing skills and ability to publish in highly ranking international journals. Other requirements include an excellent command of the English language, as well as an ability to read printed and handwritten historical sources in eighteenth-century German. The appointee will need to be able to work both independently and as a part of a research team. Previous knowledge of phenomenology, feminist theory, and/or posthumanist theory will be considered an asset.

The University of Helsinki offers a first-class research and teaching environment as well as the preconditions necessary for international cooperation (https://www.helsinki.fi/en/about-us/careers/why-university-helsinki). The position is full-time and funded for 42 months. The salary of the postdoctoral researcher will be based on level 5 of the demands level chart for teaching and research personnel in the salary system of Finnish universities. In addition, the appointee will be paid a salary component based on personal performance. The starting salary of the postdoctoral researcher will be ca. 3300–3600 per month, depending on the appointees’ qualifications and experience. A six-month trial period will be applied.
