Avoin työpaikka väitöstutkijalle: Doctoral researcher in Gender Studies, University of Oulu
--------------------------------------------
Doctoral researcher position in Gender Studies in a research project ’A Spitting Image: Direct-to-consumer DNA testing and new networks of kinship (A-SPIT)’ in the unit Values, Ideologies and Social Contexts of Education and Eudaimonia institute, University of Oulu

We are now looking for

A Doctoral researcher in Gender Studies

for a maximum of four years, starting at the earliest on 01.01.2023 in a research project of ’A Spitting Image: Direct-to-consumer DNA testing and new networks of kinship (A-SPIT)’ lead by associate professor/docent Johanna Hiitola, Gender Studies, Faculty of Education. The applied position is under the Emerging projects programme 2023-2026 within the context of Eudaimonia Institute, which offers a high-level international multidisciplinary environment supplied with cutting-edge infrastructures in the strategic focus area Humans in Change.

The research project investigates how the new availability of direct-to-consumer (DTC) DNA testing shapes the way in which kinship ties and collectives are formed. By utilising the sociology of association and critical and queer kinship studies, we seek to follow the traces of DNA tests from test tubes to databases and, finally, into people's intimate relationships. In addition, we examine how Finnish Sámi indigenous communities perceive these new technologies. Our team also interrogates the complex ethical issues surrounding DTC DNA testing, such as situations in which tests reveal sexual violence or other unsettling information.

We are looking for a doctoral researcher to carry out their independent research on the effects of DTC DNA testing. You are free to choose your own focus. For example, new kinship ties, emerging ethnic or community belonging, indigenous DNA (with an ethical approach emphasizing self-determination), adoption or donor-conceived children and adults, to name a few possibilities.

The position is supervised by associate professor/docent Johanna Hiitola who is a feminist family sociologist and the director of Gender Studies as well as the founder of the Research Group for Epistemic Matters (REM). The supervisory team will also include Senior Research Fellow Pauliina Rautio who is an expert in post-qualitative and multispecies methodologies and hosts several projects on citizen science and multispecies education. The doctoral researcher will also have a third supervisor from the REM research group.

Requirements

You must hold a Master’s degree or an equivalent degree (e.g. licentiate) preferably in gender studies, social sciences (sociology, anthropology, social work, social policy, political science, etc.), education or other relevant field. The relevance may also come through your focused studies. In addition, you must be knowledgeable of some of the following fields or fields closely related to these approaches: feminist science and technology studies (STS), new materialist or post-qualitative methodologies and/or sociology of associations (also called actor-network theory).

Your Master’s degree must have been completed with good grades (at least 60% of maximum grade, or 3/5, in both the taught studies and the Master’s thesis). Ability to pursue independent research and excellent writing and fluency in English is expected. The doctoral researcher position is intended for an Early Stage Researcher (ESR) who, according to the ”European Charter for Researchers and the Code of Conduct for the Recruitment of Researchers”, is defined as a researcher in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research activity, including the period of research training. Applicants will either be starting their doctoral training or have completed no more than two full years of training (adjusted for possible previous part-time status) at the time the position is filled. You will carry out your doctoral studies in the Human Sciences Doctoral Programme of the University of Oulu Graduate School (or one of the other UniOGS Doctoral Programmes, if appropriate) and you must meet the minimal requirements to receive doctoral study rights as defined in UniOGS.
